Wells is largely known as the smallest city in England, having had city status since medieval times with the construction of the Wells Cathedral. The city's name comes from three wells that were once dedicated to Saint Andrew.

Two of them are located in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and Cathedral, with the third being in the market place. Evidence has been found of an original Roman settlement within the city, this was later taken over by and expanded upon by the Anglo-Saxons.
